The OMEGA Electronic Ignition was designed for the 1-Cylinder and 2-Cylinder BMW motorcycles equipped with battery ignition and 6V/12V electrical systems with the aim of removing systematic errors and disadvantages of the points ignition, such as:

points wear and condensor problems
the electronic ignition does not wear
ghost S-marks because worn timing chain, bent cam shaft nose or similar imperfections
the electronic ignition gets the information straight from the crank shaft
advance mechanism problems such as worn out springs or spring rate tolerances
the electronic ignition calculates each ignition pulse precisely, using one of 15 pre-programmed advance curves, the design also features temperature compensation and has been (user) tested up 150°C/300F
a weak pulse to the coils creating a weak spark
the electronic ignition creates a constant energy level of over 120mJ for each ignition pulse using only minimum power from the battery
The possibility of choosing 1 out of 15 pre-programmed advance curves allows an individual "tuning" of the engine/motorcycle for solo or sidecar operation on flat country or in the mountains. So in layman's terms, what is the advantage of using the OMEGA Electronic Ignition:

the electronic module is physically attached to the alternator and does NOT replace the points
the points ignition stays intact and fully operational and can be used in case of emergency with a simple swap of one cable
no more points wear
no more trouble with sticky advance springs
no more trouble adjusting ignition and dwell time
better starting maybe
supposedly better gas mileage
smoother running
depending on the model programmable advance curves for pinging or sidecar operation or bad gas

The OMEGA system can be further optimized in perfomance to achieve state of the art needs for combustion at least equal to and can be much superior to the existing stock systems in use. The Airhead points system can be improved by using the OMEGA in combination with the 1981 and later black twin Bosch coils of 0.6 ohms each and get a much stronger spark.
